Why is it important to keep my gums healthy?

When plaque is not removed it hardens to form tartar which gives home to bacteria. This bacteria can cause inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease and characterised by red, swollen and tender gums that bleed easily. This condition can be reversed with proper brushing and flossing. The next stage of gum disease is periodontitis which can cause gums to pull away from teeth and form pockets of infection. Treatment at this stage is critical to prevent further loss of bone and loosening of teeth.

Good oral hygiene like brushing and flossing at least twice every day can help prevent gum infections, cavities, and tooth loss. Having your teeth cleaned and checked by a dentist or dental hygienist regularly is also important because tartar and plaque can still build up and cause gum problems without professional care.
